How to use the ass to srt

  1. 00:01

    Open the file

The format is read from the content, so a misnamed file still opens correctly.

  2. 00:02

    Check the output

The panel shows the start of the converted file before you download it.

  3. 00:03

    Download

Saved in UTF-8 with the extension and timestamps of the new format.

  1. Why convert ASS to SRT?

ASS (Advanced SubStation Alpha) is the format of fansubs and karaoke: it carries fonts, colours, positions and effects. Many TVs, set-top boxes, phones and video sites only read SRT, or show ASS files with the raw codes on screen. SRT is the plain, universal version: text and times.

  2. What is kept and what is lost?

The text, every start and end time (ASS counts hundredths of a second, which SRT writes exactly), forced line breaks (\N), hard spaces (\h), and italic, bold and underline, which become <i>, <b> and <u>. Positions ({\pos}), alignment ({\an8}), colours, fades, karaoke timing and drawings have no SRT equivalent and are removed. Lines are written in time order, whatever their order in the ASS file, and numbered from 1, as SRT expects.

  3. What about signs and songs on separate styles?

ASS files often have a style for dialogue and others for on-screen signs or song lyrics. In SRT they all become ordinary lines. If you want only the dialogue, delete the sign lines in the list before downloading, or use the Clean panel to remove music lines. Sign lines are often marked with {\an8} to sit at the top of the screen; in SRT they would sit at the bottom with the dialogue, which is another reason to check them before you save.

  4. Can I edit the ASS file and keep it as ASS?

Yes. Choose ASS as the output and the script info, styles, the style and actor of each line, and override codes are written back as they were, with your edits to the text and times.

Questions

Does it read SSA files too?

Yes. SSA is the older version of the same format; the editor reads the Format line of the Events section, so the field order of either version is understood.

Why are there two lines at the same time in my SRT?

ASS can show a dialogue line and a sign at once. They stay as two SRT lines with overlapping times, which most players show stacked. The Fix panel lists overlaps if you want to merge or move them.

Will the SRT show the right characters?

Yes. ASS files are read as UTF-8 or UTF-16, or as Windows-1252 for older files, and the SRT is written in UTF-8.

Can I convert ASS to VTT instead?

Yes. Pick VTT next to the download button. The same rules apply: formatting tags that WebVTT supports are kept, styling codes are removed.

Can I check line length after converting?

Yes. ASS lines are often long because the style wraps them on screen; the line length checker finds lines over your limit and can rewrap them onto two lines.
